Tankless units are considered to be “on-demand,” meaning they heat only when you turn on the faucet. These units typically operate on natural gas or propane, as opposed to electricity. When a hot water tap is opened, the unit turns on. Water is then heated as it flows through the heat exchanger. Because they do not keep water in a storage tank, tankless hot water heaters are able to supply a continuous amount of hot water.
